HISTORY
Early History In the early days of Sweden, Gothenburg was a very important and strategic place to control, as it was the only way to get into the North Sea from Sweden. Gothenburg was very influenced by multiple nationalities such as German, Dutch, and Scottish.
17th -19th Century Gothenburg had huge walls built around it for defense in the 17th century. The walls were later removed in the 18th century, with the introduction of cannons; which would easily tear the walls down.
With time, the other Scandinavian countries conquering other lands, eventually put Gothenburg in a more secure position, due to their allies being closer, and enemies being further. This allowed Gothenburg to grow. Gothenburg later became a very important trade port because they were the only ones on the west coast that was allowed to trade with many merchants from other parts of the world. In the 18th century, Gothenburg grew even more, doing very well in the fishing industry, and expanding their trade routes.
